Shimadzu adopts Platio to facilitate its forest conservation activities

Press Release

Tokyo — September 9, 2021 — Asteria Corporation (Japan listed, Security Code: 3853) announced today that Shimadzu Corporation, headquartered in Kyoto, had introduced mobile app creation platform Platio as a data collection tool for forest conservation activities.

Shimadzu will begin systematic conservation projects in which the company used Platio to develop a forest survey app tailored to Shimadzu’s activities and record the species of trees and growth status, among other data, with the app, thereby streamlining maintenance and management of forests.

Shimadzu is working to resolve various environmental problems in line with its commitment to sustainable development and growth of society. Since 2008, the company has involved in “Shimadzu Corporation Forest Creation Activities” in the city of Nantan, Kyoto Prefecture, in support of the activities of the Model Forest Association of Kyoto Prefecture. Through this activity, Shimadzu has implemented conservation initiatives such as thinning and tree planting, and offered employees and their families opportunities to learn biodiversity in cooperation with local communities.

As part of these efforts, Shimadzu, in recent years, has striven to conduct its unique forest conservation activities by bringing a scientific perspective to them. To acquire data on vegetation for each season, the company believed that it is necessary to visualize the entire area of the forest and adopted Platio as a tool to gather and share such data. Using a plant distribution map created with records on Platio, among other data, the company intends to draw up forest preservation plans with regional characteristics taken into account.
