-Report a near miss incident on the immediate worksite
-The process can be completed with a smartphone
-The number of reports has doubled using the app

Background and Result

Toyotsu Recycle Corporation is aiming to build an automobile “resource recycling” system through the collection and recycle of rare metals and parts reuse. The company promotes company-wide safety activities under its “safety first” policy. It also puts effort into improving safety at recycling factories by recording “near miss” incidents that could lead to a major disaster or accident.
Before the adoption of Platio, Toyotsu Recycle workers would handwrite reports on a designated form, which created problems such as a large amount of time spent on filling out the form, the difficulty reading handwriting and differences in the level of detail provided by workers. The paper-based reporting process also required them to understand and write down an incident, making it impossible to immediately take measures.
Toyotsu Recycle then overhauled the reporting process to address these issues and began considering an app-based reporting flow using smartphones and tablets; it decided to introduce Platio, which enables operational reforms led by frontline workers at a low cost and without the need for coding. Toyotsu Recycle’s unique “Near Miss Reporting App” which records near miss incidents that occurred at factories was created by factory manager without programming experience in just three hours.
The number of reports made through the app has doubled compared to the time when the reports were made with papers. Also photos and videos can be attached to a record as visual information of near miss incidents. Reports are automatically sent to administrators via e-mail at the same time when they are recorded on the app, which speeds up the process of understanding the details of the incident and implementing improvement measures. The streamlining of the processes from reporting to data management has reduced the workload of administrators by 20 hours per month. The growth in the number of reports has made it possible to analyze trends in incidents that require more attention and to make effective operational improvements.
Besides Near Miss Reporting App, Toyotsu Recycle created 12 kinds of unique apps for factory operations, including “4S Check App” and “Pre-work Inspection App” for forklift use. These apps are being used by workers. The company intends to promote “on-site digital transformation (DX),” including digitization and streamlining of operations, by continuously creating original business apps that meet the needs of frontline workers.

Message from Toyotsu Recycle

  • The Platio app has increased the number of reports and enhanced employee awareness of the importance for improvement. We sometimes receive similar reports from workers on the frontline, which helps us identify common issues in hazardous areas.
We have already created about 12 kinds of apps that fit various on-site operations, such as “4S Check App” and “Pre-work Inspection App”. We will continue to improve cumbersome and inefficient on-site operations and promote on-site DX.
Masayuki Ishii, manager of the Production and Logistics Department and
head of a factory in Saitama Prefecture at Toyotsu Recycle Corporation

Business Plan

Platio has been highly evaluated for its ability to create and deploy business apps unique to individual companies without coding in just three days, and adopted by companies and organizations in diverse industries. The product has also helped expedite DX at worksites through the digitalization of on-site operations and streamlined work processes. As a result, sales almost tripled in FY2020, compared with the previous year, and this trend continues into the current fiscal year. The aim is to achieve 500 downloads by the end of FY2022.
*A mechanism which allows creation of software and apps without writing a single line of code. Platio users can deploy necessary functions and modify app’s specifications to make it more serviceable at worksites, even if they do not have expertise in a programming language.
